Rory McIlroy Deep In The Azaleas But Emerges Hardly Smelling Like Roses.

A frustrated Rory McIlroy became the very last player to make the cut in the 2104 Masters holing a testy five foot par putt in a shock round of 77 for a four over par tally.

It is McIlroy’s third score of 77 in 20 rounds of Augusta National that also rekindled memories of his disastrous 2011 final round Augusta meltdown of 80.

The double Major winner’s round got off to a decent start, and despite a second hole bogey, he birdied the uphill par four, 4th hole for a second day running but it then soon turned sour when he doubled the fourth after well flying the green with a hybrid but then deciding to head back to the tee and play an iron shot.

However he bounced back also taking birdie at the fifth for a second straight day.

Then at the downhill par four 10th, and the same hole that brought McIlroy unstuck on the final day of the 2011 Masters, he was again in trouble and taking the second double of his round.

McIlroy was now four over par for the day and three over in total.

That was then four-over when he bogeyed the 11th, and then showing his frustration hurling his Nike ball into nearby Rae’s Creek.

He played a 9-iron into the par three, 12th hole that just cleared a bunker leaving him a makeable birdie but it only added to his frustration in walking off with a par.

And if to compound his misery, McIlroy’s second shot into the par five 13th cannoned off a sprinkler head and well into the azaleas behind the green.

Next was footage of McIlroy playing from the waist-high bushes though not emerging smelling like roses as he proceeded to drop another shot.

However the current World No. 9 dug deep to carve out three remaining pars to end at four over par and be among 43 players in the 97-player field to make the cut in the year’s first Major.

It left McIlroy trailing 11 shots behind former Masters champion Bubba Watson who will take a three-shot lead into the third round.

“It was very frustrating.  I just really couldn’t get anything to go my way,” he said.

“I had a couple of really bad breaks on 4 and 13.  Got a really massive wind switch on 4.  And then hitting the sprinkler on 13 to go up into the azaleas.

“I felt like I played well coming in.  I gave myself looks at birdie almost every hole.  I couldn’t get one to drop.  Felt like I had good putts and they were either hitting the high side of the hole or low side of the hole.  Just nothing but going in.”
