While Augusta National lost out heavily due to Monday’s practice round wash-out they saved some money on the opening day of the 2014 Masters.
It’s customary at the Masters to present gifts of crystal for a range of on-course achievements ahead of crowning the winner.
However despite the sunny and warm conditions the tough Augusta National pin placements led to just three eagles.
And along with Bill Haas leading the field with a 68 it means Augusta will part with one crystal vase that will be presented to Haas and just three sets of commemorative crystal goblets with two of the eagles at the par five 13th, and the second easiest hole during round one, and the third eagle at the par five 16th and rated the third easiest.
Korean Sang-moon Bae eagled the 13th while American Ken Duke and Australia’s and reigning Shell Houston Open winner Matt Jones each eagled the 13th.
It is the second piece of crystal for the Sydney-born Jones who earned a vase for an ace during the Par 3 Contest.
The toughest hole on day one was the par four 11 that yielded just two birdies but also 39 bogeys, three double bogeys and one other.
In contrast, the easiest hole was the par four second where there was 40 birdies and just nine bogeys.
