Al Howard – Australia’s Oldest PGA Professional Passes Away.

The PGA of Australia has advised the sad news that PGA of Australia Life Member Albert Howard OAM has passed away.

Despite his ailing health over the past few months Al still had an incredibly sharp mind and will be fondly remembered for his significant contribution to golf in Australia.

Born on the 8th May 1913, Al was previously the oldest living PGA Professional in Australia and celebrated his 100th birthday in 2013.

Joining the PGA in 1931 Al had a long and distinguished career as the Head Professional at Woollahra and Cromer Golf Clubs as well as at Monash and Rosnay courses.

He was also a renowned golf course architect with the Tasmania Golf Club, Dalby Golf Club, Auburn Golf Club and Woolooware Golf Club a legacy of his passion for golf.

Al was an active and dedicated PGA Member giving much of his time to the development of the Association and golf in the country.

He was the Chairman of the New South Wales PGA in 1950 as well as a respected golf columnist.

One of his great life achievements came in 1994 when he was recognised for his services to golf by being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 1994.

The PGA of Australia and its Membership send their condolences to the Howard family and will remember Al as an outstanding and valued PGA Professional, may he rest in peace.
