Rory McIlroy will play alongside fellow US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy for the opening two rounds of the Australian Open in Sydney.

Ogilvy captured the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot in New York State to end a 11-year drought for Australian golfers in the Majors since Steve Elkington captured the 1995 PGA Championship at Riveria in suburban L A.

McIlroy burst back from his 2011 Augusta anguish in sensational manner with his eight-shot success at the Congressional Club in suburban Rockville, Maryland.

Last year he won a second Major in winning the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island by the same margin.

Joining the duo will be PGA Tour based Australian Matt Jones.

The three will tee off in the afternoon half of the field at 12.10am local time Thursday.
