Adam Scott will look to draw on Royal Melbourne memories of nearly a decade ago in an outside chance of capturing individual honours in the 2013 ISPS Handa World Cup of Golf.
The World No. 2 posted a second straight three under par 68 to move inside the top-10 with an overall three under par tally.
Scott had five birdies in his round and just two bogeys as he looked to fight back from the horrors of his opening round 75 on the course where he successfully defended last week’s Australian Masters title.
“There was a situation in the 2004 Heineken Classic when I teed off in the last round eight shots behind Ernie (Els) and then on the 10th tee we were square, so that can happen around here if the wind gets up,” he said.
“And even in the team format, if we are within in five shots we still have a chance to win the team event.
“Personally, I feel that if the leaders are not into double digits under par then we are every chance to post a number tomorrow and win this tournament.
“We are going to have to play great and hit some good shots and give myself a chance.
“Conditions-wise it was still pretty tough out there today and if you don’t play well it’s hard to have a good score out there.
“But then I have hit so many putts from 50 to 60 feet the last two weeks it’s hard to have to make them all the time.”
Scott will head to Sydney on Sunday night to begin preparations for Thursday’s starting Australian Open at the Royal Sydney Club in Sydney.
The reigning Masters champion captured a first Australian Open title in 2009 when he won at the New South Wales Club and on a golf course designed by the same designer as Augusta National – Dr. Alister McKenzie.
However Scott has only competed at Royal Sydney once before and that was in the 2006 Australian Open won by fellow Queenslander John Senden.
“Even though New South Wales will always be special, I like Royal Sydney too,” he said.
“I find that a fun golf course to play. I’ve only played the one tournament there and that was the ’06 Australian Open but I am looking forward to going back there.
“I hear it’s in good condition although they’ve had some pretty shocking weather up there. Hopefully, it’s all right but it’ll be a good event next week for sure. I can’t wait.”
