Lost in yesterday’s final round of the Turkish Airlines Open was the mark of respect displayed by 14-time Major winning Tiger Woods to Mustafa Kemal Atuturk – the founder of the Republic of Turkey.
His surname means ‘The Father of the Turks’ and Sunday marked the anniversary of Atuturk’s passing on 10th November, 1938.
Atuturk was the famed military officer who commanded the Turkish Army in their defeat of Allied forces, including Australian and New Zealand troops, at Gallipoli.
Woods and a number of fellow Turkish Airlines competitors were practicing ahead of their final round when there was a minute’s silence at 9.05am and the time that Atuturk passed away.
There is pictures of Woods without his Nike cap appearing in many editions of today’s newspapers as well as reports of Victor Dubuisson’s stunning victory on the Maxx Royal course.
And of course, today at the 11th hour of the 11th month we stop to honor those killed in World War 1, and with next year being the 100th anniversary to the start of the world’s first world war.
