Adam Scott has began his four-event Masters celebration in winning style and also capturing Australia’s golfing ‘Big 3’ with an emphatic victory in the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Pines in Queensland.
Scott went into the last day leading by three shots and despite visiting American Rickie Fowler putting up a superb challenge, Scott was never in any real danger of defeat.
There had been a thunderstorm delay with Scott and Fowler in the middle of the 12th fairway and when play eventually resumed Scott showed his Augusta National winning class in putting a 215-meter second shot to tap-in distance and the easiest of eagle ‘threes’
Scott then birdied the 14th and 15th holes on route to a final round four under par 67 for four shot 14-under par victory tally.
Fowler started well with a first hole birdie but could look back to bogeys at the sixth, 13th and 17th in not helping his cause in ending with a 68 for a 10-under par.
“I came out and I knew I had to do something special to win this,” Scott said.
“I came out and hit some great shots…it couldn’t have been better.
“This is the one I wanted desperately…it is the icing on the cake. It’s been an incredible year since April. I’ve looked forward to coming home ever since.
“It means so much coming home to my friends and family including my Queensland family…this one is for my folks.”
Scott becomes the sixth player in history to complete a career grand slam of winning the Australia ‘Big 3’ joining Greg Norman, Craig Parry, Peter Senior, Peter Lonard and Robert Allenby as the only men to have won the Australian PGA, Open and Masters titles.
Norman was the first in 1984 in winning the back-to-back Australian PGA titles. Norman had already captured the 1980 Australian Open (won also in 1985, 1987, 1995 and 1996) while in 1981 he was fitted with the first of six Australian Masters winner’s gold jackets (Other victories were in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1990)
Allenby is the only player to win the ‘Big 3’ in a same season and he did that in 2005 winning all three titles. Allenby also captured the 2003 Australian Masters and had burst onto the international stage in dramatic style winning the 1994 Australian Open.
Senior won the ‘Big 3’ and with the popular Queenslander doing so last year in winning the Australian Open title. Senior had also won the 1989 Australian Open along with victory in the 2010 Australian PGA Championship and having captured the Australian Masters titles in 1991 and 1995.
Parry captured the 1992 PGA Championship, 1992 and 1994 Australian Masters before winning the 2007 Australian Open title
And Lonard won the 2003 and 2004 Australian Open, the 1997 and 2002 Australian Masters and succeeded in capturing the Australian PGA in 2007.
