Jens Dantorp followed in the footsteps of good friend and Sweden compatriot Kristoffer Broberg to capture a maiden Challenge Tour victory in the weather-affected Rolex Trophy.
Dantorp described his win as the “greatest day of my life”after posting a final round 70 to win by a shot with an 18-under par tally on the Golf Club de Geneve in Switzerland.
Drawing on a good luck text message from Broberg, the 24-year old Dantorp returned to the course on Sunday morning to complete the final round and did so in glorious manner with a birdies at 14 and 15 to overhaul Portugal’s José-Filipe Lima and post the club house lead at -18 (270).
Lima in the group behind missed his birdie opportunity to force a play-off, finishing with bogey for third place and a shot behind Spain’s Adrian Otaegui who was at 17-under par after a round of 66.
“Hanging around in the clubhouse for seven hours for the rain to stop yesterday was torture,” said a jubilant Dantorp.
“I’ve never really been in this position, so a lot was going through my mind, when we eventually got out, I wasn’t focused.
“But this morning, I felt much more relaxed. I wanted the win so badly that I was trying too hard and getting too emotional.
“The birdies on 14 and 15 were the key, as I’d missed a couple of chances early on, so I was starting to think that maybe it wasn’t going to be my day.”
Dantorp earned a gleaming new Rolex wrist watch, a first prize of Euro 26,000 to move into 11th place on the Challenge Tour money list.
