Vijay Singh Blanks Media Despite One Off Tampa Bay Championship Lead.

Controversial Vijay Singh blanked a PGA Tour official and waiting media despite moving to within a shot of the lead on day one of the Tampa Bay Championship in Florida.

The double Major winning Fijian is contesting the event under the cloud of likely suspension for using deer antler spray, and a banned PGA and European Tour substance.

Singh had posted a two under par 69 in cloudless but cold and windy conditions on the Copperhead course along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline.

A Media Officer with the PGA Tour, approached Singh to ascertain if he would provide comments on his round.

However Singh responded politely:  “No, no comments.”

In contrast, defending champion Luke Donald was a little more forthcoming despite bogeying three of his closing four holes in a round of a one under par 70.

The World No. 3 was tied for the lead at four under par but proceeded to drop shots at his 15th, 17th and final holes where he failed to get up-and-down from a back bunker in the bright but windy conditions.

“I’m extremely disappointed right now as I played lovely golf for 16 of the 18 holes today, and really had it under control,” he said.

“It could have been six or seven under if a couple more putts had dropped but to finish like that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

“I played a couple of poor iron shots down the stretch but there is a lot of positives today and I’m excited about trying to build on those for tomorrow.”

American born players dominated the leader board late in the day with Harris English and Brian Harmon at five under par and one clear of Shawn Stefani.
