Photographs of players and caddies having snowball fights earlier this week is ‘good news’ for the future of the WGC – Accentue Match-Play Championship being staged at the Dove Mountain course in Arizona.
That’s the view of PGA Tour Commissioner, Tim Finchem when asked today (Sun) whether the fact play was halted on Wednesday due to a snow storm could force officials to move the event to a new location.
Snow began falling near lunch on Wednesday forcing an abandonment to play leaving the likes of World No. 1 Rory McIlroy or 14-time Major winning, Tiger Woods not managing to commence their rounds.
McIlroy in fact was being interviewed by SKY Sports when he was hit by a snowball thrown by fellow Irishman Shane Lowry, who he was due to meet the next morning.
Then there was the sight of American Rickie Fowler (see photo below) happily throwing snowballs in the players carpark.
Then a futher two inches of snow overnight meant a further delay on Thursday morning.
“No, the fact we had snow storms will not have any long-term ramifications on the event being hosted in Tuscon,” said Finchem.
“The weather this week has been challenging for the players but they have scored well, and some of the visuals of PGA Tour players having snowball fights is absolutely terrific, so that’s good news.
“But they are there today playing in vdifficult condition and these are professionals and they can handle it, so I don’t see any long term impact due to unusual weather.”
