England’s David Lynn heads into the second round of the Northern Trust Open sharing fourth place and showing he’s slowly settling into life of the PGA Tour.
It left Lynn trailing just three shots behind American Ryder Cup star, Matt Kuchar and in his best start in four events as a full PGA Tour member.
Lynn burst onto the international stage in amazing manner by virtue of his 98th World Ranking position that earned him an invitation to contest last August’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.
It was only his second Major appearance and Lynn made the most of his opportunity. After opening scores of 73-74 he was lying in a share of 37th place ahead of posting consecutive 68s on the weekend to finish in second place and eight strokes behind winner Rory McIlroy.
Lynn’s prize cheque of $865,000 was easily the biggest of his career with his next best payday being the €200,000 he won for his 2004 KLM Open title on the European Tour.
The performance in South Carolina has earned him a return invitation to the 2013 PGA Championship and an invitation to the 2013 Masters.
Surprisingly, Lynn’s only previous Major Championship showing was in 2003 when he finished T53rd in The Open.
“It’s better than what I expected, making new friends,” said Lynn when asked after his first round in L A how he was settling into life on the PGA Tour.
” The difficult thing I found the first few weeks is more than one course, whereas I sort of have been used to‑‑ because I played European Tour for 15 years, you know every course inside out and that’s something I’ve missed a little bit, and these courses it’s just a little bit of an edge maybe for other people who have played it a lot. Just hope I can sort of start putting a few rounds together.”
Lynn, who turns 40 later this year, was also asked if he had established a base in the US and his response was quintessential David Lynn.
“My base is my suitcase at the moment,” he smiled.
“My girlfriend came over last week, because I didn’t play Pebble, because I’m playing four in a row now and we have a week here in L.A., staying in Santa Monica. It was a nice week, never been to L.A. before, so hit all the sites and went up to Malibu.”
This week’s Northern Trust Open is Lynn’s fourth PGA Tour event as a full member. He’s missed the cut in two appearances and finished T34th in the Farmers Insurance Open.
