Guan Learns Harsh Lesson With Experience The Key On Day One Of Emirates Australian Open

The 14-year old Chinese pair of Tianlang Guan and Andy Zhang clearly showed they have much to learn after struggling badly on day one of the Emirates Airlines Australian Open.

Guan, winner of the recent Asian Amateur title, and his similar aged compatriot Zhang, who created history earlier this year in becoming the youngest player ever to compete in a U.S. Open, carded respective rounds of 82 and 76 on a bright but breezy opening day around The Lakes course in Sydney.

Guan qualified for next April’s Masters in winning the prestigious amateur title but he clearly showed he has much to learn among professional company.

Included in Guan’s round of 10-over par was three bogeys in succession to commence his round ahead of a fourht hole double bogey to be five over par after just five holes.

It was no better with the teenager, who also is exempt into Final Qualifying for next year’s Open Championship, dropping further shots at the seventh and eighth hole before taking bogeys at 14, 16 and 17.

Zhang faired slightly better despite being four over par through six holes as he then 13 and 14 but ended his round with bogeys at 17 and 18 to lying in a share of 86th place and 10 shots behind former Australian Open champion, John Senden of Australia
