Seve’s Son Dresses His Father In His ‘Sunday Uniform’

With tears streaming down his face, Baldomero Ballesteros revealed how he dressed his father Severiano in his favourite Sunday clothes – white shirt, navy blue trousers and navy blue sweater.

The eldest of Ballesteros’ three children explained they were his father’s favourite golfing clothes.

It was like a ‘Sunday uniform’ as they were the clothes Ballesteros wore in capturing his five Major Championship titles including the most special – 1984 Open Championship at St. Andrews.

“I thought it was the best, and everyone nodded in agreement,” Baldomero told Spanish media.

Ballesteros’ family gathered at the family home in Pedrena, northern Spain, with Baldomero described how the 54-year-old bid farewell to his relatives.

“He said goodbye to us all one by one, he grabbed our hands and whispered in our ears. I told him ‘I love you’ and he replied ‘I love you as well,'” he said.

“He knew he was dying, and he did everything showing great fortitude.”

Baldomero along with his brother Miguel and sister, Carmen said his father had asked for a private funeral at 1pm on Wednesday in the parish church of San Pedro de Padrena.

Ballesteros will be cremated and his remains then handed to the family.

“He told us everything and there was to be just a funeral in the town church and nothing more,” said Baldomero.

“Everything else was to remain within the intimacy of the family.

“My father is a village boy and we thought it was the best.  His funeral rites will be as simple as for any other neighbor.  He will be sent on his way like anyone else.  He was born here in Pedrena and will remain here.”

Those attending the ceremony will include Jose Maria Olazabal, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Sergio Garcia, Colin Montgomgerie including many leading Tour officials including European Tour CEO, George O’Grady and PGA Tour Commissioner, Tim Finchem.

It seems also a special charter flight will travel from Majoroca and the Majorcan Open with Colin Montgomerie among those aboard and certain to be joined by Ryder Cup stars Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley.

Majorcan Open Tournament Director, Miguel Vidaor indicated those players attending the funeral service will be excused from the Pro-Am and arrangements will be made for them to tee-off in the afternoon on day one of the event at the Pula Golf Club.
