As expected, new U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson has withdrawn from next week’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.
Simpson indicated after winning at Olympic Golf Club his wife was expecting at around the time of golf’s oldest Major.
The American formally advised the R & A today but Simpson will not be replaced in the field.
Simpson was due to make his second Open Championship showing after finishing 16th on debut last year at Royal St. Georges.
He is second Major Champion to withdraw after 1998 British Open winner, Mark O’Meara withdrew.
And Simpson is also the second player not to be competing due to a wife havingĀ a baby as Australian Jason Day withdrew last week for similar reasons.
