The veteran England pair of Paul Broadhurst and Barry Lane have turned back the clock in qualifying for this month’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

Broadhurst, 46 finished the leading qualifier at the Old St. Annes course and one of four courses hosting Local Final Qualifying.

Broadhurst has not contesed golf”s oldest Major since 2009 but after rounds of 70 and 67 his seven under tally placed him first and one stroke ahead of fellow England player, Barry Lane and Argentina’s Rafa Enchenrique.

It will be a sentimental return to Royal Lytham and St. Annes for Broadhust who made his Open Championship debut at the Lancashire links gem in 1988 and the Open made famous by the late, great Seve Ballesteros.

Broadhurst had won the Lytham Trophy that year and finished the leading amateur in the 1988 Open and was present at  the presentation ceremony when Ballesteros was handed the famed Claret Jug.

Broadhurst again made the Royal Lytham ‘cut’ in 1996 but did not qualify for the 2001 Open at the same course.

Lane, 52 also will end a six-year Open Championship when he tees up.

Lane made his Open debut in 1987 at Muirfield and he’s played Royal Lytham three times before in The Open but missing the cut in 1988 and 1996 but finishing 29th behind David Duval in 2001.

Lytham will be the 682nd European Tour appearance of Lane’s career, just 24 events short of Sam Torrance’s record.

At other venues the following qualifed for the July 19th commencing Open Championship.

Hillside – Dale Whitnell (9-under par), Warren Bennett (8-under par) and Steven Tilley (6-under par).

Southport and Ainsdale – Morten Oram Madsen (9-under par), Elliott Saltman (6-under par) & Ian Keenan (6-under par).

West Lancashire – Steve Alker (7-under par), Scott Pinkley (5-under par) & Steven O’Hara (5-under par).
