Europe Silence Big Apple Fans Taking Stunning Three Point Bethpage Opening Day Lead

Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team brilliantly silenced Big Apple golf fans, taking a huge three point lead on day one of the 45th hosting of the competition on Bethpage Park Black host course on New York’s Long Island.

Not even the appearance of USA President Donald Trump could help lift Keegan Bradley’s men and with Europe taking an emphantic and all important three point lead of 5/2 to 2 1/2 from the opening day proceedings.

European stars on day one for Europe were Spaniard Jon Rahm and England’s Tommy Fleetwoodwinning both their morning Fourball match with Rahm parntering Hatton and then backing-up to team with Austrian Sepp Straka in the afternoon Fourballs.

Fleeetwood teamed with Rory McIlroy in the morning to win and then the recent BMW Tour Championship winner joined Justin Rose in an emotion-packed last match of the day the all-England duo to win 1up and this after Europe dropped back to 1up with a bogey on 17 to win 1up after both teams birdied the last.

Rose’ emotion (see video clip above) at the last mirrored the European mood throughout the first round of competiton.

Huge disappointment for the host Americans was World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and crowd favourite Bryson DeChampbeau losing both their matches.

Indeed Scheffler and opening match partner Brooks Koepka were absolutely humbled in losing the first match of this 45th Ryder Cup hosting 5 & 3 to the Europeans Ludwig Auberg and Matt Fitzpatrick.

The only Americans to taste a win were – Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay winning their fourball match 2up over Bob MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland while Cameron Young and Harris England combined to hand out a 6 & 5 beating to Rasmus Hoyjaard and Ludwig Auberg.
