It’s just the finish Rory McIlroy needed to pack into his golf bag and that is to be now heading tonight from London Heathrow to New York City and Bethpage Park for the up-coming Ryder Cup on a high after posting a rousing final round 65 at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in leafy Surrey.
As he had done a week ago one of home soil in capturing the Irish Open, Mcllroy saved the best for last at DP World Tour HQ also eagling the 72nd hole in a closing 65.
McIlroy’s eagle ‘3’ did not earn him a vastly long overdue maiden BMW PGA championship crown but after three earlier indifferent rounds this week in leafy Surrey he’s last regular tournament round ahead of the Ryder Cup was just what Europe needed prior to the September 26th tee-off to the Ryder Cup at the host Bethpage Park course on New York’s Long Island.

McIlroy’s Wentwort closer was four shots fewer than his opening round of 69 while he signed for a second round 72 and a day three 70.
“You enjoy yourself a bit more when you play like that instead of the way I played the first three days”, he said.
“But yeah, I played the par 5s much better. That was the difference between the first three days and today. I’ve played the par 5s in 6-under, which I think got me back to under par for the par 5s for the week.
“But, yeah, I played much better. And yeah, obviously a really nice way to sign off the week, last competitive round going into the Ryder Cup. So nice to finish on a high”.

McIlroy will join the full Euopean Tour making their way this week to Bethpage Park for practice rounds on the host Ryder Cup course ahead the commencement to the much anticipated start to competition and with Donald quitely confident of returning with the gleaming golf trophy since the 2012 Miracle at Medinah.
“I think we definitely are getting into Ryder Cup mode”, said McIlroy when quizzed how has it been getting in frame for the biennial team event.
“We had a really good team dinner on Tuesday night with the caddies, and the wives and the partners were there, as well. We’re getting ready to go on this practise trip tonight to New York.
“Yeah, it’s sort of — there’s been a lot of talk and a lot of chat and a lot of thinking about the Ryder Cup. But you still want to play well this week. I saw glimpse of that. There was a lot of birdies and eagles and just a few too many bogeys and double-bogeys to have a chance to win but overall, happy with the week and obviously very excited for what’s to come in a couple weeks’ time”.
Of course, already much of the pre-2025 Ryder Cup showdown talk has been about what affect the ‘take no prisoners’ New York crowd will play in prcoodings.
“I’m trying to get the crowd to cheer here and I’m trying to keep] them as quiet as possible over in the States,” he smiled.
“It’s a bit of a different thing. The crowds last week in Ireland and this week were amazing, even teeing off at 7.45 in the morning and seeing so many people lined in the first fairway. It’s very cool to play in atmospheres like this, and it’s one of the reasons why I love coming back here to play”,
McIlroy will be making his eighth appeaerance for Europe and having been on a winning team in five of seven prior European sides.
