Cabrera Returning To The Masters First Time In Six Years A Winner After Maiden Champions Tour Triumph.

Angel Cabrera could not have asked for better return to The Masters for what will be a first occasion in six years after capturing a maiden Champions Tour victory at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in Florida.

Cabrera, 55, posted a closing one-under-par 71 to win by two shots at 11-under from fellow Major champions K J Choi (69) second at nine-under and Retief Goosen (68) third at eight-under on the host Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton.

The champion Argentinean golfer was one clear coming down the last but after Choi bogey, it was a comfortable two shot triumph for Cabrera.

The win for the 2009 Masters champion is Cabrera’s 55th pro title success but a first since June last year in winning the European Tour’s Legends Tour event in Scotland.

It was an emotional Cabrera in victory saying: “Everything I’ve gone through the last few years, being here, having a chance to win, is very emotional”.

He had spoken to Golf Digest just recently he expressed embarrassment for his outside the ropes behaviour

said he was embarrassed by his behaviour and asked his former partners for forgiveness.

“I am repentant and embarrassed,” Cabrera said. “I made serious mistakes. I refused to listen to anyone and did what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted. That was wrong. I ask Micaela for forgiveness. I ask Celia for forgiveness. They had the bad luck of crossing paths with me when I was at my worst. I wasn’t the devil, but I did bad things.”

The victory means Cabrera is now fully exempt on the PGA Tour Champions through 2026. And he goes to the Masters on a high note.

“I can’t wait to see him,” Scott said on Sunday at Augusta National.

“It’s a happy thing for me. We’ve got a fairly long history. I first met him on the European Tour before we both were on the PGA Tour. We’ve played Presidents Cups, we’ve been partners.”
