McIlroy Luke-Warm Switching To Match-Play Format For Season-Ending Tour Championship

Four-time PGA Tour No. 1 Rory McIlroy is undecided if he agrees with talks that the season-ending Tour Championship should change to a match-play format as is being suggested.

It was earlier this year when it was reported that the Tour may abandon ‘it’s always been stroke-play’ thinking and go with match-play.

If so, the Tour Championship held at the East Lake course to the east of Atlanta would be the only tournament on the schedule to be match-play.

McIlroy was asked his thougths ahead of this week’s $20m Arnold Palmer Invitational.

“Everyone sort of talks about the match play format, and like we don’t have a match play tournament,” he said.

“So, would East Lake lend itself to match play and would that be exciting? And it might be, but I think one of the comments has been, you know, we play stroke play the whole way throughout the season, and then to decide the FedExCup champion, we play match play?

“It’s like, I don’t, I don’t know if that’s the best way to determine the season-long champion. It could be. Like, like I like the format, I like the idea.”

Now did he agree or what?

What we do know is that just once in his ‘individual’ playing career, and currently boasting 42 worldwide victories, has McIlroy captured a match-play format success and that being in defeating Gary Woodland 4 & 2 in the 2015 WGC Cadillac Match-Play Championship.
