Exclusive: Ferguson Optimistic Teeing-Up In Joburg After Being Sidelined For A Month.

Ewen Ferguson’s quietly-confident a nagging neck injury will not hinder him teeing-up in this week’s co-sanctioned Joburg Open.

Ferguson, 28, has not competed since withdrawing after just six holes in the opening round of last month’s Qatar Masters in Doha.

The Dubai-based Scot had been struggling with the injury since his solid 16th place in January’s season-opening Hero Dubai Desert Classic but then disappointingly missing the halfway cut in his next two events in Ras Al Khaimah and Bahrain before his early exit in Doha.

Speaking exclusively with TOURMISS & Record Sport Ferguson said: “I’ve not played a full round since Bahrain, so that’s a month ago.

“The game is there abouts and the good thing is my practice sessions have been decent.

“Hopefully, my neck plays ball this week as I just been struggling with a sore neck, so hopefully I’ll be all good.

“I’m sure I’ll be fine and feeling really optimistic being back in South Africa playing golf”.

Scotland’s second-highest ranked player at World No. 155 is competing in Joburg for a first occasion since November 2020 and when the Joburg Open was played at Rand Park.

This year’s event is being hosted by the Houghton club just to the north of the South African capital.

The reigning BMW International Open champ Ferguson got a first look at the host course on Monday and though a Jack Nicklaus design, the Dubai-based Scot reckons it has a British feel.

He said: “The course is good, nice and tree-lined and tight.  It reminds me very much like an inland British course.

“It’s tight off the tees and also quite intimidating while you are able to shape it a little bit which is cool, and you have to be quite accurate with your iron shots because there are small wee targets, little pockets where the pins are.

“Usually, those types of courses are the ones I am usually pretty good at.

“Hopefully, the weather holds up for us as there’s nothing worse than having to deal with storms in Johannesburg”.

Joining Ferguson will be Scott Jamieson, Richie Ramsay, Calum Hill and Connor Syme.
