Whitnell Only Second Player In DP World Tour 53-Year History To Record Two Aces Same Round.

English golfer Dale Whitnell has become only the second player in DP World Tour history to remarkably register two holes-one during a once-in-a-lifetime round on day two of the Investec South African Open in Durban.

Whitnell, 36 commenced his second round in the weather-affected event with a first hole birdie and then stepped-up to the 179-yard par-3 second hole and found the bottom of the cup for a ‘1’.

He then brilliantly eagled the par-5 third hole so that he commenenced his round in the 114th hosting of the prestigous event – 3, 1, 3.

And if the ace on the second was not enough, Whitnell proceeded to also ace the par-3 12th hole.

At this stage, Whitnell was eight-under for his round and with still six holes to play on the host Durban Country Club course and after birdies at 14 and 15 he was very much in frame to possibly post a 59 now being 10-under with three to play but as so often can happen he double the par-4 16th ahead of a redeeming birdie on 18 for a still respectable nine-under 63.

It is estimated the odds of making two holes-in-one in the same round are 67 million to one.

Then was Whitnell back in the clubhouse and in a superb gesture Whitnell shouted a few beverages – see the image below.

Whitnell becomes just the second player in DP World Tour history to savour multiple holes-in-one in the same round after Aussie Andrew Dodt achieved the remarkable feat at the Nordea Masters in 2013.

“I hit a flush seven-iron on the second and I didn’t realise it had gone in until down the bottom they cheered,” Whitnell, who took 11 years to earn a full DP World Tour card after turning professional in 2009.

“It’s a weird feeling. Obviously the adrenaline is pumping but you have to focus on your job and I managed to do that today.

“I’ve never had one in tournament play. I’ve had one in practice at Le Golf National in Paris, but to have two in one day is pretty special.

“I’ve had everything today: an air shot, two bogeys, a double, three eagles and come out nine-under par so I can’t complain.”

Disappointinly for Whitnell there no new car on offer either on the second or the 12th holes, just the honour on the next tee.
