Luke Donald: “I Can Now Pick LIV Guys At Will” With Garcia Now Eligible For Ryder Cup Selection.

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald made the comment just over a month ago at the ‘2025 Ryder Cup – One Year To Go’ celebrations in the heart of New York city.

Donald was asked if he had spoken to Spaniard Sergio Garcia and he confirmed he had spoken to him a few weeks earlier.

In addressing the question to put to him, Donald remarked: “If you fulfill the regulations and the rules that the DP World Tour (DPWT) set, then you’re eligible. There’s a bunch of LIV guys that play on LIV who are eligible now so that I can pick them at will”.

It seems that last sentence may come true given news that Sergio Garcia, and the European Ryder Cup team legend he is, will be eligible from the 1st January, 2025 to qualify or be picked for Donald’s European side.

The Bethpage Park selection door has opened on Garcia after confirmation by the DP World Tour he’s paid fines of around $1.2m in resigning from DPWT in May 2023 to join LIV Golf.

As well, the now 44-year-old Garcia can earn European Ryder Cup selection points from any DPWT sanctioned event and, as such, it opens the door on Garcia returning to a regular DPWT event as a fully-fledged member for a first time since withdrawing after an opening round 76 at the 2022 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and what was also his 326th Tour event.

Whether or not Garcia should qualify automatically for Donald’s side, the fact the double European Team captain has someone of Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials that he can select will be huge plus in looking to defeat the host Americans and on a golf course that will attract the toughest and meanest golf fans imaginable.
