Rory McIlroy broke down in tears in joining boyhood hero Seve Ballesteros as a six-time DP World Tour No. 1.
McIlroy has many times shown his passion for the game of golf but he had tears running down his face in describing what it meant to match Seve’s achievements.
And McIlroy did so in this year’s 16th version of the seaon-ending DP World Tour Championship not only capturing the tournament for a third occasion and in the process winning the ‘double’ for a third time in his career.
McIlroy brilliantly birdied the 72nd hole for a 15-under tally and win by two shots at 15-under.
“It means a lot,” said an emotional McIlroy.
“I’ve been through a lot this year, professionally, personally, it feels like the fitting end to 2024.
“I’ve perservered a lot, had close calls, wasn’t able to get it done, so to be able to get over the line.”
McIlroy arrived in Dubai needing just to finish 11th and for nearest Race to Dubai rival Thirston Lawrence to win the title however the South African struggled to finish the tournament in a share of 30th and also to drop from second to finish his season third on the Race to Dubai.

However, it was when asked about Seve that had McIlroy emotional in being handed a sixth Harry Vardon No. 1 title.
“It’s really cool,” said McIlroy.
“I think everyone knows what Seve means to European golf and Ryder Cup players, European Ryder Cup locker room we have quotes of Seve, we had shirts of Seve from ’95 in the last Ryder Cup he played, he means so much to European golf and for me to be mentioned in the same breath I am very proud.”
And now to become the all-time leading No. 1 Race to Dubai player and chase down the eight-time winning Colin Montgomerie.
“I’m up for beating the record,” said McIlroy.
“I’ve just won a third in a row and I’ve really made it a priority on my schedule the past few years to give myself the best shot to win a Race to Dubai, and I don’t think that will be changing soon. I’m hoping to go for my seventh next year and try chase Monty down.”
