Smith On Target For Career Lucky 13th Trophy At NSW Open

Aussie Cam Smith will be targeting career win No. 13 heading into the final round of the Ford NSW Open at the Murray Downs course in Australia.

The former Open Champion led after day one but then slipped behind LIV Golf team-mate Lucas Herbert on day two before Smith again forged his way to the front, posting a five-under 66 and lead by two shots at 15-under and two clear of fellow Aussie Corey Lamb.

Herbert is back in a three-way share at 11-under-par.

Smith’s last win was just last month when his Ripper LIV Golf team captured the LIV Team Championship in Dallas, Texas and with Herbert a member of the winning ‘Down Under’ side.

The 2022 Open Champion’s last ‘individual’ success was in August 2023 in winning the LIV Golf Bedminster.

Smith’s only disappointment on ‘Moving Day’ on the rural New South Wales course was a bogey on 17 but that aside, he’s now the definitely the man to beat.

“It was really a shame to not finish as good as I wanted to,” said Smith. “Did what I needed to do today and on 17 there it was just, I don’t know. I don’t even know what it was to be honest. It’s all a blur.

“Leading into the last day is where you want to be, you want to be there thereabouts. I just need to do more of the same as what I did today,” he said.

“With Herbie (Herbert) having the day he did today, I expect that he’s probably going to come out with a good one tomorrow”.

A Smith win would also send the champion Aussie into a strong position to win next week a fourth Australian PGA Championship in his beloved home state of Queensland.
