Legendary Jack Nicklaus has been hosting the now renamed Cognizant Classic since 2007 when tournament’s main beneficiary is the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.
This week’s host Champions course was opened in late 1981 before being completely redesigned by Nicklaus in 2002, and with the three-hole stretch of the 15th, 16th and 17th holes affectionately known as “The Bear Trap.”
Nicklaus and wife, Barbara along with the families live all within an easy drive of the famed PGA National complex that features six golf courses.
It’s never difficult walking up the steps to the clubhouse to be reminded of Nicklaus’ association with PGA National as there’s a large, menacing-looking wooden bear in front of the clubhouse, as well as it’s twin brother is at the back of the 16th tee.
Inside the clubhouse there’s references to Nicklaus career while there’s real, meaner-looking Grizzly Bear that has been stuffed but sports claws that each must be a foot long and sporting a broken golf club in it’s mouth.
Each year, there’s also a special Nicklaus treat within the media centre and that is compliment Jack Nicklaus ice-cream that was first introduced at the 2015 Honda Classic and boasting a range of mouth-watering flavours.
My favourite? Oh! That’s easy – Both Triple Chocolate and Homemade Vanilla.
As was the yearly scenario at the Honda Classic, it’s not uncommon to see Nicklaus about the clubhouse
