Walker Having ‘Fun’ Muscling His Way To Rolex Grand Final Lead

Scot Euan Walker brilliantly ignited hopes of celebrating joining the main DP World Tour for next year with victory in this week’s secondary Tour season-ending Rolex Grand Final on the Spanish holiday isle of Majorca.

Walker, 30 brilliantly eagled the 13th and also grabbed five birdies in a flawless round of a seven-under 65 to lead by a shot on the host Club de Golf Alcanada course.

This week is the Scot’s fourth attempt in succession at seeking to earn full Tour status having fallen short of the leading 20 who will earn a DP World Tour card this Sunday by finishing 24th in 2022, 26th in ’23 and 25th a year ago on the final money list ranking.

He currently lies 17th to be borderline in earning his Tour card and, of course, would dearly love to return home not only with his DP World Tour card but also on a winning Spanish high in ending top in the small field of just 45 players.

Walker said:  “It was quite fun out there today as I was in position the whole time, so I really didn’t have much scrambling to do to save par.

“So, that makes the round that much more relaxing and so much more enjoyable, and also so much more fun.

“It was also much more enjoyable being bogey-free and on a tricky layout.

“Though for 90 per cent of my shots, I hit the ball where I wanted it to go and it’s quite simple, isn’t it?  It sounds like an easy thing but then basically today I was just hitting the ball where I wanted to hit it.

“That made it easier ….easier than normal (smiling)”.

Fellow Scot Daniel Young, and also set to join Walker on the main Tour next year, is ranked 8th and also a DP World certainty, signed for a 68 to be sharing sixth.

Two-time Hotel Planner Tour season winner David Law remains in frame to celebrate his return to the DP World Tour next year with a third ‘W’ starting the day in third spot on the money list, grabbing six birdies in a 69 to by lying tied 13th but remaining in third of the overall money list, and three rounds remaining to secure the win.

If successful, The Paul Lawrie attached Law will become only the second Scot after Marc Warren in 2002 to win the season-finale event.

Calum Fyfe struggled in posting a 72 and projected to drop to 26th on the money list and needing to be top-20 if he’s to join his fellow Scots Walker, Law and Young on next year’s DP World Tour.
