Penge’s Stunning Rise From Illegal Betting Scandal To Hallowed Augusta National Fairways

Near on a year ago Marco Penge found himself banned by the DP World Tour for placing bets on multiple golf events.

While Penge was not betting on himself, it nonetheless led the Tour taking disciplinary action though deciding the events which Penge had bet on “had not been comproimised”.

Though when we talk about bets, his bets were not 100s, 100s and 100s of Pounds but averaged just less that £ 50.

Penge, who has just completed his first full year on the European-based tour, has received a three-month ban – with one month suspended for a year.

He was also fined £2,000.

Penge retained his DP World Tour status at the final regular event of last season and that being a T22nd place finish at the Genesis Championship in South Korea.

Now nine months on and the 27-year-old Penge has secured three DP World Tour victories, including Sunday’s play-off triumph at the Espana Open and a victory that has taken him to be the new World No. 31 and also within 393 points of Rory McIlroy on the 2025 DP World Tour ‘Race to Dubai’ money-list.

Penge’s Spanish success also earned him at automatic invitation into next April’s Masters, and first teeing-up at Augusta National, along with an Open Championship tee-time.

As well, Penge is also already clearly putting his name forward for the European Ryder Cup team in Ireland in two years’ time and with many calling for him to be chosen by Luke Donald as a ‘captains pick’ for his Bethpage Park side.

“I’m proud of where I’ve come in the last year,” Penge said following his Madrid success.

“After missing out on the Ryder Cup, my next goal was to get into the top 50 in the world. To play the rest of the season knowing I’m in the Masters, having won the Spanish Open, three wins this year, and also qualifying for next year’s Open … well, I’m just so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and for making the most of them.

“I’m pretty sure I’ll be in all four majors next year, and I never would’ve thought that six or seven months ago. I want to keep going for more. Hopefully, I can win again before the end of the year and maybe even catch Rory.”
