MacIntyre Marvels In Miserable Storm Amy Affected Dunhill Links Conditions

Top-Scot Bob MacIntyre was clearly very much at home marvelling in the miserable conditions on the day of the 40th anniversary Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

MacIntyre posted a second straight round of 66 to end the bad weather shortened day tied for the lead at 12-under in the event that looks very much headed for a Monday finish.

The Oban lefty and World No. 7 grabbed seven birdies, dropping just one shot, on the Kingsbans Links courses to be tied with South African Richard Sterne, who posted a 67 on the Old Course.

MacIntyre who ended his round some 45 minutes before play was officially halted around 4.16pm, described his round as: “Almost a perfect round of golf”.

He added: “It was just a lovely round, especially once the weather came in. It was so difficult in the wind, but I controlled my flights really well and hit some beautiful shots.”

Louis Oosthuizen, who won the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews, is just one stroke behind MacIntyre and Sterne on 11-under-par. His second round 68 at Kingsbarns was another superb effort, though he had completed 12 holes before the worst of the wind and rain which made it more about holding on to a score.

MacIntyre has received a hero’s welcome from Scottish golf fans this week following Europe’s Ryder Cup victory against the United States on Sunday, as have his three teammates Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick.

But there is no doubt who is the crowd’s favourite and MacIntyre added: “I’m where I want to be after two rounds and I’m playing nicely.

“But it was a big team effort out there with my caddie Mike, keeping everything dry and staying warm. I’m also lucky my mindset was very calm and we could just see where it got us.”

Stern who was also naturally pleased with his round, believing the draw he received helped him today. “After all the years of playing here, you get good draws and bad draws, and today I got a good draw, I’m pretty happy with that.”

The Team Championship is proving to be a thriller with a four-way tie as the second round is almost complete. Overnight leaders Jack Senior & Dery Desmond are tied on 24-under-par with Wenyi Ding & David MacFarlane, Harrison Crowe & Cian Foley and Alejandro Del Rey & Matthew Goode.

Play got underway as scheduled at 9am on each of the three courses before rain began to fall around noon but then increasing appreciable as the day went on.  Along with the rain becoming heavier, the wind picked-up appreciably while it also was getting colder.

Kingsbarns was clearly the destination of most given the leading players were teeing-up on the course that last July celebrated it’s 25th anniversary.  However, the onslaught of further rain, the incease the wind and the cold tested the patience of the heartiest of Scottish golf fans who were making their way home to the warmth of their dweelling.

Unfortantlely, greens were beginning to flood and particuarly at St. Andrews before Tour officials announced an end to play around 4.15pmish on three courses.

All but a few dozen did not end their second rounds and they will do, weather permitting on Saturday morning.  However, the weather forecast for day three is being dominated by the after affects of Story Amy and with winds being predicted upward of 60 mph.

With Saturday seemingly to be closed to competition it would see the tournament head into a Monday finish and, if so, for a third occasion in three years.
