McIlroy Sticks To His Word, Deciding Not To Contest Opening FedEx Play-Off Series In Memphis

Grand Slam winning Rory McIlroy is winning no friends with confirmation of his decision not to contest the opening event of the FedEx Cup Play-Off Series next week in Memphis.

McIlroy’s name was not among the 69 players in the FedEx St. Jude Championship field released as entrants on Friday for the $20m event starting next week at TPC Southwind.

Of course it only backs McIlroy suggesting earlier in this year he was going to have a much lighter PGA Tour schedule in 2025.

So, while the likes of World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, defending champ Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele and past winner Viktor Hovland will deal with the stiffling heat, McIloy will probably be lazing by the pool at his Florida abode.

As well, we recall McIlroy’s frustrating effort in Memphis a year ago when he finished tied 68th in the 70-player field at 9-over.  Sensibily, and in a move “that should have been the decision in the first place”, the event has reverted back into a 72-hole strokeplay event and thus dumping a rank-based starting stroke advantage so all 70 players will start the event on par.

Though with McIlroy now officially confirming ‘No, not me’ it does not put him in a friendly llght.

McIlroy is currently second behind Scheffler in the latest FedEx Cup standings, so he doesn’t need to play the St. Jude to be among the top-50 who qualify for the BMW Championship the following week. The playoffs then wrap up with the Tour Championship, to which the top 30 in the FedEx standings will advance.

McIlroy last competed in finishing T-7 at the Open Championship two weeks ago
