McIlroy Seven Shots Fewer Than His Practice Round Posting Oakmont Opening

Grand Slam winning Rory McIlroy’s 2025 US Open round of an untide four-over 74 was at lease seven shots fewer than last week’s much-publicised practice round of 81 on the host Oakmont course.

McIlroy kick-started his effort with back-to-back birdies at the 11th and 12th however it proved the highwater mark of his opening round as the World No. 2 came home in a golfing ambulance.

Rors bogeyed his 10th, 13th, 15th and 16the holes but then doubled the par-3 eighth hole he was playing as his 17th.

He pared the last in signing for a four-over 74 and seven shots fewer than last week’s 81.

The disappointing effort handed McIlroy a share of 67th place as the afternoon half of the draw were taking to the host Pennsylvania course.

A tale of two nines for Rory.

Poor iron play was McIlroy’s let down, ranking 108th in the field in strokes gainedned approach and Paul McGinley lamented that fact when talking to Sky Sports Golf.

“Rory didn’t play that badly but his iron play let him down, he is down in the bottom 10% in iron play”, said McGinley.

“You have to be good in iron play around here, the targets may be big in size but in reality they are small because if you miss it in the wrong spot you are going to pay the price.”
