Proud Scot Ewen Ferguson felt right at home in early chilly conditions on the opening day of the Soudal Open in Belgium.
Fergsuon grabbed four birdies, two on each nine in a bogey-free four-under 67 to be sharing fourth place, two shots adrift of three players – Dutchman Joost Luiten, Aaron Cockerill and Spaniard Angel Ayora – sharing the lead on six-under on the host Rinkven International course in Antwerp.
The three-time DP World Tour winner was out in the third group from the 10th hole picking-up birdies at the 14th and 16th holes and then the fourth and fifth holes.
Ferguson said: “It was a great round. When I started this morning, it was freezing and a lot colder than I have played in for a while.
“So, to be standing here now, I didn’t think I would have a bogey-free day, and particularly to have got through my first four holes at 10, 11, 12 and 13 which is four tough holes was very pleasing.

“I just felt after that ‘ah’ as the course opened-up for me.
“We had a bit of an inkling the weather would be really cold so it wasn’t like I was surprised by it as I was mentally and physically prepared for it, wearing warm clothes while I had my woolly hat on. The full winter kit on, if you like.
“I quite like playing in the cooler weather as being from Scotland I am kind of more used to it.
“Overall, it was a nice solid round and also nice to hole that par at the last as lunch will now taste a bit better (smiling)”.
Ferguson’s effort has him two clear of next best ScotGrant Forrest (69).
Ferguson added: “I feel like I have played well this year, made a lot of cuts but just no real fireworks.
“Though to be honest, I am just happy to be back in Europe with just short flights back-and-forward to Scotland while there is the food and everything about Europe, so happy to be back here.
“Also, very optimistic about the rest of my year”.
