Aussie Rules – Cam Davis Shares PGA Championship Lead At Quail Hollow

Aussie Cam Davis superbly holed a 30-foot putt for an opening hole birdie in posting a round of 66 to share the lead late on day one of the 107th PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

Davis, 30, is contesting his only his 12 career major and a fifth PGA Championship in succession since making his debut in the tournament in 2021.

Indeed, his best finish in those dozen major appearances was a share of fourth in the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill in upstate New York.

The Sydney golfer’s opening round at Quail Hollow included seven birdies and two bogeys that had Davis tied at the top with American Ryan Gerard.

Though at the end of the first round it was Jhonathon Vegas officially leading the way by two shots thanks to nine birdies in a seven-under-par 64.

As well, Davis recorded just 24 putts in his round.

Davis commenced his round from the par-5 10th hole in holing a 30-footer and then holed further birdies at holes 14, 15, 18, 1st, 4th and 6th holes with his only bogeys on 13 and nine.

“Really good”, said Davis when asked of his round.

“I haven’t been having the best results on course lately over the last few months and been working really hard to turn that around, and to see the first real sign that it’s turning around happen in the first round of a major, it’s very encouraging.

“But yeah, rolled a lot of putts that went in and kept the momentum going, and I feel like for a major, when you’re playing a difficult golf course, if you can do that, you can keep things moving forward.

“Very happy with my work today. But it’s still a four-round event. But you can definitely help yourself a lot by having a good first round”.
