Masters champion Sergio Garcia said he was very much looking forward to congratulating 21-year-old fellow Spaniard Carla Bernat Escuder winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur title at Augusta National.
Bernat Escuder hails from Catellon in Spain and was coached at academy run by Sergio’s father.
Bernat Escuder’s winning score of 12-under par was the lowest in the history of the event. Additionally, she became the first player ever to shoot in the 60s in all three rounds of the championship in posting a trio of four-under-pars 68s to win by a commanding three shots.
“It feels amazing. I am over the moon,” Bernat Escuder told Augusta National Golf Club Chairman Fred Ridley in an interview on NBC. “As of right now, I don’t think my brain has processed that I’ve won.”

“I knew the tournament was going to start on No. 10 because I watch all the Masters.
“So, as soon as I hit that second shot, I was like, ‘Oh, you need to get it together and just get this par.’ That was the key.”
It was a case also of third time lucky for the current Kansas State senior women’s golfer Bernat Esuder after missing the cut in 2022 and sharing 17th place a year ago.
Garcia was asked his reaction to Bernat Escuder’s win after moving into second place at three-under-par on day two of the LIV Golf Miami event at the Trump Doral course.
“I am super proud of Carla. To be able to win the Augusta Women’s Amateur, it’s unbelievable”, said Garcia. “Yeah, she came from our academy obviously before she moved here to the U.S. and played in college.
“But yeah, it’s an amazing feat and super proud of her. Can’t wait to tell her well done”.
Garcia was then asked he could make it a Spanish victory double later this week at Augusta.
“That would be nice. But there’s still a long ways to go”, said the smiling 2017 winner of the Augusta green jacket.
