World No. 1 and defending Players champion Scottie Scheffler was asked his thoughts on what is a new overhanging tree in place at the par-4 sixth hole on this week’s host Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass.
It is the first time in 11-years players will stand on the tee and have clearly in their view the over-hanging branches of an oak tree planted on the right side of the forward tees of the 393-yard hole.
The original tree had been planted when the Pete Dye designed course was built in 1980 but it began being affected by a disease, also developing splits ahead of removal in 2014.
However when Schefffler was asked about the new tree he had many confused with his reply.
“I heard some rumors. Is it technically an old hanging tree, because there used to be a hanging tree there years ago”, he said.
He was asked if it is a ‘new’ tree to which he replied: “It’s a new old hanging tree, right?
“It was something that used to be on the hole. I’m interested to see how it is. I think that’s another hole that they lengthened. That’s something we got to go figure out what club it is off the tee. But yeah, sadly I’ve only heard the rumours. I’ll find out tomorrow”.
Ahh …. Thanks Scottie.
