McIlroy Reveals Elbow Concern Ahead Of The Masters

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy surprised all post his Houston Open final round by revealing he is being  troubled by a right elbow issue ahead of next week’s Masters.

“My right elbow has been bothering me a little bit so I’ll maybe just get some treatment on that and make sure that is OK going into Augusta,” said McIlroy.

McIlroy has rarely mentioned any sort of injury he may be suffering, as the four-time major winner has competed all these years seemingly injury-free.

Though there was a wrist concern early on day one of the 2011 PGA Championship with the then reigning US Open champ stopping at the third hole and asking to have his wrist inspected.  A medical officer wrapped the wrist while McIlroy later attended a local hospital for an MRI examination that revealed a strained tendon.

Of coures, there was the headline news story in the lead-up to the 2015 Open Championship when he had been forced out golf’s oldsest major, and also at St. Andrews, with a leg injury and that was the result of playing a friendly game of football (soccer) with his mates.

More recently, he teed-up in the 2023 DP World Tour season-ending Tour Championship with his right wrist strapped, indicating the result of jamming his wrist in the lead-up to the Dubai event.

It’s why following his comment on Sunday in Houston, and with the Masters McIlroy’s much-anticipated next event, there should be many a raised eyebrow.

McIlroy wound-up his pre-Masters inside-the-ropes preparations with a share of fifth place in Houston, posting a closing round of 64 for a 15-under-par tally on the Memorial Park host course.

Though it was another frustrating week for McIlroy commencing with a score of 70 and then adding scores of 66, 65 and then his six-under last day effort that began and ended with bogeys but not before plenty of McIlroy brilliance capped by holing an 18-foot eagle ‘3’ putt at the par-5 eighth hole.

“Yeah, still feel like I’ve got some stuff to work on”, he said.

“Still don’t think like my game is absolutely 100 percent under the control I would want, but it’s nice to have a week to work on some things. I’ve got my coach, Michael Bannon, coming in tomorrow, so we’ll be working at home and making sure game feels good going into the Masters”.
