Ferguson Jokes: “Rory McIlroy’s Still Got Bloody 20 Events To Go .. But I’m Sure My Shot Will Be Well Up There”.

Scot Ewen Ferguson was shouting out ‘Shot of the Year, Shot of the Year’ and hoping now not to be denied at season-end by ‘Bloody’ Rory McIlroy after pulling off a stunning up-and-down birdie from a greenside bunker on day one of the Hero Indian Open.

Ferguson was off to a horror start in the very hot afternoon conditions bogeying the first hole and then doubling the third before the Dubai-based Scot turned it all around at the par-5 eighth hole on the host DLF course in New Delhi.

The Scot’s second was close to the left wall of a greenside bunker but with enough room for Ferguson to squeeze himself in between his ball and with his legs and lower back virtually up against the two-foot high or so bunker wall.

Ferguson said: “Well, my head was off when I got there. Then I noticed there was no lip on the other side of the bunker with just a little bit of rough between the bunker and the green.

“So, I thought I will try and stab it and hopefully the little bit of rough might slow it down.

“I couldn’t hit it too hard as it would go through and find the water and if I hit it too soft, my next shot would at least be on the upslope of the bunker.

“If I did that, I could put some spin on the ball and just make par.

“So, I stabbed it out of there perfectly and Pablo (Larrazabal – playing partner) is clapping his hands like mad though I was thinking to myself that is straight out of his handbook and something he would do.

“It turned out to be a good shot and hopefully a sign of things to come around greens”.

Ferguson’s shot went some 10-feet by the hole but he calmly knocked it in for the first of five birdies in his round of a level par 72 and only four shots off the lead.

The triple Tour winning Ferguson joked that it’s not the first occasion in his career he’s had to pull off similar shots.

He said (smiling): “The number of times I’ll find myself out of position I’ll need to play those types of shots.

“So, a little bit of luck and a little bit of feel while taking in the contours and all other things”.

However, when Ferguson was asked if his bunker shot up-and-down had a chance for ‘Up and Down Shot of the Year’, he wasn’t too confident of his chances.

He said (smiling): “I mean look. It’s still the start of the year and bloody Rory McIlroy’s still got bloody 20 events left but then I’m sure he’ll hole a 2-iron somewhere that will be it but then mine is well up there”.

The trio of Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, England’s Marcus Armitage and Swede Marcus Kinhult share the lead at four-under.

Calum Hill, and the only other Scot in the field, was struggling to be three-over.
