Colin Montgomerie heads into the final round of the Staysure Marbella Legends event now one round shy of ending a 63 month winless in capturing what would be a 55th pro career title for the now 61-year-old Scot.
Monty kick-starting golf’s traditonal moving day in horrible manner bogeying his opening holes before eventually settling down to birdie two of his closing three holes in a second round 7o to move to nine-under and just two adfit of England’s Simon Griffiths, who sighed for a 68 to lead at 11-under on the host Aloha course on the famed Costa Del Sol.
While Griffiths leads, most eyes were on Monty who claimed seven straight European Tour No. 1 titles between 1993 and 1999 ahead of an eighth in 2005 just 50 kilometres away at the famed Valderrama course.
“I was quite proud because it would have been easy to let that round go,” said Monty smiling.
Eight-time DP World Tour number one Colin Montgomerie birdied his last hole and was in buoyant mood after fighting to a second round of 70. “I thought I’d got out the wrong side of the bed after the first two holes, so to be four-under from then on was okay. It was a good threeball and I really did enjoy it, and I don’t often say that when I’ve finished a round of golf.
“I need another 65 like I had on Friday to be able to win. It’s difficult to win.
“It doesn’t matter where you’re playing – Champions Tour, the Legends Tour, the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour.
“Whatever it is, it’s very, very difficult to win. There’s always someone that has their week or does well and putts well and holes out and has the run of the ball. So I’ve got to be that guy tomorrow. I’ve got to be that guy that holes out tomorrow.
“So if I shoot 65 and then I have half a chance.”
