Gallacher Knows New Career Won’t Be Easy, Posting Best Finish In Some Six Years On Legends Tour Debut.

After a best finish for some time, rookie Stephen Gallacher knows after his debut Legends Tour appearance he’s going to have to work hard if he’s to enjoy success on a third different career tour.

Gallacher posted a third straight score of 69 to finish eighth, and the leading Scot at close of the season-opening Staysure Marbella Legends at the Aloha course on Spain’s Costa Del Sol.

The Bathgate pro turned 50 last November making him eligible for the European Legends Tour and with Gallacher ending six shots shy of England’s Simon Griffiths who signed for a 68 to win by two shots at 15-under from Aussie Scott Hend (64).

Colin Montgomerie’s effort to end a more than five-year winless drought collapsed under the weight of a closing 73 for Monty to share ninth, one behind Gallacher.

Gallacher said: “It was a fun tournament for me and one that I had been looking forward to.  It’s been great meeting-up with many old friends that I have not seen for years, so I have really enjoyed the three rounds on a great golf course that I’ve been competing on now for many years.

“Plus, we’ve had beautiful sunshine all week so what’s there not to like”.

The four-time DP World Tour champ grabbed 13 birdies and dropped just four shots in a best finish, and also a first top-10, in a month shy of six-years since capturing the 2019 Hero Indian Open.

Gallacher said: “This is my maiden Legends Tour event and the standard of play is very strong.  Simon Griffiths posted three great scores to win and on a very tricky golf course with the new greens they’ve built are very tough to read.

“So, I’m impressed with the quality of golf this week. I played with Jose Maria (Olazabal) today and we had (Miguel Angel) Jimenez behind us, and he won last week in Morocco.

“It’s going to be tough competing out here for the first time down this new career path but one that I am really looking forward to”.

Gallacher will now have more than a two-month weeks before he and caddying son, Jack head the sun-splashed Caribbean for the April 25th starting Barbados Legends hosted by Ian Woosnam at the Apes Hill club in Barbados.

He said: “We have a bit of time off now before Jack and I head to the next event in Barbados.  He’s going to continue caddying and will do quite a few with me out here on the Tour”.

MEANTIME ….

The Scottish duo of Ryan Lumsden (68) and Daniel Young (69) shared ninth place at 16-under on the secondyHotel Planner Tour at the NTT Data Pro-Am at George in South Africa.

South African Wilco Nienaber was never headed after an opening 60, winning by seven shots at 27-under.

Young will now join the already exempt Nienaber in this week’s DP World Tour Magical Kenya Open.
