Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg brilliantly birdied the 72nd hole to capture the Genesis Invitational and make it three victories in succession for European-born players on the PGA Tour.
Aberg, 25, also secured a second PGA Tour triumph in three seasons thanks to a closing round of a six-under-par 66 for a 12-under victory tally on the host Torrey Pines course
Aberg was tied with American Maverick McNealy coming down the last, then split the fairway with his booming 317-yard drive down the par-5 hole before finding the green with his third and then holing a seven-footer for birdie ‘4’ and the ‘W’ and deny McNealy by a shot.

The Swede’s win, that earns him a cool $4m first prize cheque, comes on the back of 2023 Ryder Cup winning colleague Rory McIlroy capturing last month’s AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Belgium’s Thomas Detry capturing last week’s Phoenix Open.
And if you include Sepp Straka’s American Express triumph a month ago that is four European-born winners in the past five PGA Tour events.
European Ryder Cup captain, Luke Donald must be rubbing his hands with glee and no doubt hoping this European good fortune continues right through to the hosting of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Park Black on New York’s Long Island.
It was a super return to form in the best possible manner for Aberg after having to withdraw from last fortnight’s AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with an ‘unknown’ illness.
“I think it’s just sort of the comeback from the last couple weeks. I sort of felt like I wasn’t really myself, wasn’t feeling great, wasn’t swinging great, sort of struggled a bit at home last week with how I was playing”, he said.
“Was nice to come here sort of starting to feel like myself again and physically getting there. It means a lot. This is the best feeling in golf
and to be able to do what I did today is definitely going to help me going forward in the future”.
And then there was the surprise of tournament host, Tiger Woods there to congratulate Aberg.
“Yeah, a little bit, absolutely. I sort of — I spoke with Tiger a couple weeks ago at the TGL in West Palm Beach and that was the first time that we really spoke, had a conversation”, said the smiling Swede.
“To win his event, he means so much to our game and to our tour, it’s really cool, it means a lot. And he is the GOAT, so absolutely”.
