Rory McIlroy has offered some simple cooking advice to current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is returning to competition this week after severely cutting the palm of his right hand in making ravioli on Christmas Day.
Scheffler and his young family were renting a house but in electing to make dinner he admits did not have the proper kitchen tools to make the Italian dish and improvised using a wine glass.
What then happened has sidelined Scheffler from competition since then and with McIlroy and Scheffler returning to the PGA Tour for a first time this year at this week’s $US 20m AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
“I think he’s (Scheffler) has made enough money to hire a chef”, said McIlroy smiling after being asked his thoughts on the injury.

“Also, why is his cooking his food himself. I thought initially it would be a fun story than that but then …. we were together in Las Vegas on the 17th December and played that match with Brooks and Bryson, so.
“Firstly, your concern is that everyone is okay and sounds like he is. It’s good too he’s teeing-it up this week which is good”.
McIlroy then ends talk of the incident by whispering: “Yeah, get a chef!”
Scheffler revealed the cut was so deep the 28-year-old needed surgery and with the wound now healed sufficiently for the American to take his place in this week’s event.
The Texas-born golfer won seven events last year, including a second Augusta National green jacket, and also the Olympic Games gold medal in Versailles,
Asked if he is anxious about a possible impact from the surgery, he said: “Not at all.
“When you want to make ravioli you want to make it from scratch so that means roll the dough and then cut the dough but we were staying at a rental house, so we didn’t have the right tools and the only thing I had was a wine glass.
“I had my hand on top of the glass and it broke. Since then I have nothing but horror stories about wine glasses.
“So be careful and even like me, as I don’t drink wine. So, it broke and the stem of the glass kind of got me.
“It’s one of those deals where I can’t live in a bubble. You gotta live your like and accidents happen. It could have been a lot worse as I spoke to someone who did the same thing and the stem went straight through their hand.
“It was just one of those deals as I was blaming myself for being so stupid. I was mad at myself because I was like ‘gosh, that’s so stupid’, but you just don’t think about it when you’re in the moment.
“It really wasn’t terrible, but I knew I kind of messed something up just because the way my hand wasn’t really moving much and if I did move it, it hurt pretty badly. So I kind of knew something was up.”
Scheffler had intended to return to competition earlier this month but was advised by doctors to give the injury further time to heal.
“Missing those two events is not fun; I enjoy playing them,” he said.
“Just because I missed two I don’t want to change the flow and cadence to my schedule. If I feel like I want to add one to get some extra reps in, I will.”
Scheffler will contest the opening two rounds of the Signature event in the company of amateur David Abeles.
