Masters Champ Adam Scott Sings The Praise Moroccaan Amateur Adam Bresnau

Masters champion Adam Scott was full of praise for ultra-talented Moroccan-born amateur Adam Bresnau.

Scott and Bresnau, along with American lefty Akshay Bhatia went out in the same group on day three of the $9m Hero Dubai Desert Classic signing for respective rounds of 69, 72 and Bhatia a 73 in bright but testing windy conditions on the host Emirates club course.

It is only Bresnau’s second time in Dubai and the first being at the end of last year when he captured the Pan Arab Amateur Championship in nearby Al Zora.

The 20-year-old Bresnau was off to an indifferent opening round on Thursday in producing a one-over 73 however he turned that round on day two thanks to four birdies, two on each nine and with his only bogey at the 18th in a score of 69 to create DP World Tour history and become the first Arab-born player to make the cut in a Tour event.

Bresnau had been asked at the start of the week who would he really like to play alongside and he singled out Rory McIlroy ‘but if I cannot play with Rory, I would love to play with Adam Scott’.#

He got that wish the third-round draw was released and with Bresnau handling himself superbly thanks to back-to-back birdies at nine and 10 and his only bogeys at eight and 15.

Then as the round ended here was the sight of the 44-year-old and 32-time winning Scott shaking Bresnau’s hand, as he would post any round of golf, but also speaking with him for a good few seconds.

“Young Adam was good”, said Scott.  “It is hard to remember when I was an amateur but they seem so [well] put together.

“I think the info filtered down to juniors and college players is really good. If you told me he was a pro, I wouldn’t be surprised either.

“It was probably a great experience for Adam to be playing this week in a big event. It is huge. I remember when I got a start in the Benson and Hedges at The Belfry. It was big event back in the day. I played with Jose Maria [Olazabal] on the Saturday, and they are last impressions.

“You learn a lot out of it. What I learnt the most from the first time playing with my heroes in the game was that they didn’t do everything perfect.

“That was an eye-opener for me. When you are a kid, you think everything has to be perfect but it’s not. They don’t hit every shot well, yet manage to shoot in the 60s. And when you are off [as a young amateur], you are shooting in the high 70s.

“There is a learning curve there. It was fun to play with Adam”.

Bresnau ended his round just inside the top-40 at two-under as he now heads into the final day of the year’s first Rolex Series event.

“That was one of my goal to make the cut”, he said. “I just wanted to make history. I made it a month ago in Saudi Arabia when I finished sixth in the PIF Saudi international. Making the cut here is a big thing.

“Yesterday (Friday) I had so many calls. I was like, please leave me alone, I want to sleep. But that was nice, and it’s nice — my goal is just to show the world that Arab players, we have the potential and we have the talent.

“Now it’s only a question of time. I’m sure you’ll have kids playing on the tour for sure. I’m really happy what I did, and also for the next generation”.

And the young Moroccan was asked his thoughts in playing alongside the Augusta National winning Scott.

“I’ve played in competition with a few top professionals but Adam is definitely the biggest name”, he said.

“I played a few Asian Tour, and Rolex Series, even bigger. It’s great to be here and make the cut. It’s like a dream. When I was a kid, I was looking at Adam Scott when he won the Masters. I was looking at that and now I just played with him. It was really nice.

“As well, I played a practice round with Jon Rahm and that was nice.  “I remember I was looking in the practice round, and I was like, all right, who is playing. I saw the last tee times, Jon Rahm and I was like, oh, I’m going to play with him. He’s a nice guy. He gave me a few tips and same with Adam Scott. I think I have the potential.

“All I need now is just confidence, learn, and what they did, Adam Scott and Jon Rahm, they did it, they gave it to me. So now I think it’s only a question of practise and time”.

And what did Scott say to Bresnau as the pair headed to the scorer’s room?

“Well, he said, “Keep it up, Man. You played well. You have a place here. Just practise and you’ll be here”, said Bresnau.
