Hatton: “I’d Skip School To Watch This Dubai Event, So To Win Is Brilliant”.

Hero Dubai Desert Classic champion Tyrrell Hatton revealed he used to skip school to watch the Dubai event on TV, and admits is now amazing to join some of the greats of the game in becoming the Dubai events new champion.

Hatton, 33, birdied the last in closing 69 to capture a second DP World Tour victory in five events after winning last October’s Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

Hatton said: “This win is up there with winning the Dunhill in St. Andrews and the only thing bigger would be to win the Open Championship and winning it also at St. Andrews.

“As a kid, I used to take days off from school to watch this event and now to be a  winner of the event is amazing.

“I am just so happy I just handled myself so well while to win so close after winning the Dunhill also makes it special”.

This time a year ago there was a lot of speculation around Hatton that he was about to join LIV Golf but the Englishman made the move soon after the 2024 Dubai event, and given he had not won an event since January 2021 with victory on the Abu Dhabi HSBC tournament.

“I made the decision to move over to LIV which was really difficult and one that I didn’t take lightly. It was a week off after being here, and I honestly hated that week to be honest,” he said

“But yeah, I mean, sitting here now and being able to have played DP World Tour events, you know, and again, when I signed, I feel like I went about it the right way. I spoke to the right people, and everyone knew like my stance and how I felt about the DP World Tour and wanting to still play events.

“Yes, with the appeal process and what’s happening there, that’s allowed me to be able to play. And yeah, I love starting my season here in the Middle East.

“It’s been a (pausing thoughtfully) well, from watching the event as a kid, just makes these events that much more special and to be a part of them, and yeah, I mean, as I said, I love playing on the DP World Tour, and I feel like although I have moved over to LIV that I have still shown the commitment that I want to play.

“Whatever happens with the appeal process, whenever that will be, you know, I hope that I will still be able to continue to support this tour”.

Victory earned the LIV Legion X111 team member a cool $1.53m first prize cheque.

New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier signed for a closing 71 to be runner-up just a shot back of Hatton at 14-under.
