Hatton: “I Want To Be On The Ryder Cup Team”

“I want to be on the Ryder Cup!”.

Tyrrell Hatton could not be any clearer when asked by GolfByTourMiss what is his main golfing goal heading into up-coming New Year.

Hatton, 33 is returning to competition at this week’s PIF Saudi International following a three-week break, that included a seven-days in the Maldives, following finishing in a share of third at the DP World Tour’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The Englishman produced a run of three superb results starting from victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and then a T13th at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship before his effort at Jumeirah Estates.

Earlier in the year Hatton stormed to his maiden LIV Golf individual title capturing the LIV Golf Nashville by an impressive six strokes.

And Hatton finds himself contesting this week’s Asian Tour season final event here in Riyadh for a first time on the Tour in three months shy of three years since he was T14th in the February 2022 PIF Saudi International.

“It will be a nice way to finish the season”, he said when asked his thoughts heading into this week’s $US 2m event in the Saudi Arabian capital

“This year for me has been an interesting year. It was nice to win again. LIV Nashville was the first time I’d won a professional tournament for 3 1/2 years. So that was a big moment for me.  Then to win the Dunhill Links for a third time was special”.

Hatton’s efforts in recent weeks has him currently lying third on the 2025 European Ryder Cup ‘European’ points list and after rules changes post Rome, it will be the only points list and Captain Luke Donald to have six Bethpage Park picks.

So, at this stage Hatton will have just ‘counting’ five events between now and September next year to earn automatic selection and those being January’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic and the four majors.

And it was GolfByTourMiss question about the challenges Hatton faces, with just five European team counting events that he was asked in how difficult will it be qualify automatically for what would be a fourth straight European Team.

“Next year for me is, yes, I want to be on the Ryder Cup team”, he said.

“I think with how certainly the win at the Dunhill and then playing well in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the World Rankings that I got from there, I think I’m pretty much secure in — I don’t think I can fall outside the top 100, so I’ll be in the U.S. PGA. And I don’t think I can fall outside the top 60 before the cut for the U.S. Open. The fact that I’ve got all four U.S. majors next year is great.

“Outside of that, the only event I’ve got Ryder Cup points would be the Desert Classic in January. So as I already touched on earlier, my opportunities for Ryder Cup points are more limited than others.

“Hopefully I can play — I’m going to have to play really well to be in the automatic picks, but yeah, really my only golf for next year is The Open. I really want to be on the Ryder Cup team.

“As everyone says, once you’ve played one, you never want to miss one again. I’ve been fortunate to play in the last three, and I’d love to make it four in September”.
