Graham’s effort has him lying just outside the top-80 in a reduced fielf of 155 after Gleneagles attached Callum Hill pulled out after nine holes with injury.
Scott Jamieson leads the Scots having moved to four-under through 15 holes but dropping three shots in his closing trio.
Fifer Connor Syme signed for a level par 72.
England’s Andy Sullivan shook off a right-thumb injur to grab eight birdies in a blemish-free 64 to lead the way by a shot with an eight-under 64.
Sullivan, 37 is looking to end a more than four-year winless drought and, if so, capture a third of five Tour wins in the Rainbow Nation.
He said: “It was a surprise to do well today as I didn’t get much practice last week with the thumb being the way it was, so nice to get out there today and put in a good score.
“I’ve always had that feel good factor each time I come back to South Africa as I won my first Tour title down here (2015 South African Open), so I always get a good following and support, and I always feel comfortable down here and enjoy myself”.
Sullivan has now led a first round in his DP World Tour career for a seventh occasion and gone on two win twice.
