Tiger Woods will head a field of 18 major champions, both in the mens and womens game, teeing-up in this week’s 27th annual hosting of the PNC Championship in Orlando, Florida.
Woods and son Charlie will be seeking a maiden triumph in the event after having finished runner-up in 2021.
However, it won’t be easy for the 15-time major winning Woods in recently ruling himself out of teeing-up in his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas and not having competed in a formal event since missing the halfway cut in this year’s 152nd Open Championship.
One of the favourites, and also returning recently from injury, is the five-time PNC champion Bernhard Langer and again being joined by son Jason having won the fun event in 2005, ’06, ’14, ’19 and last year.
The Langer’s share the joint record of five wins with the pairing of Raymond Floyd and his son Robert, who teamed to win the opening three events in 1995, ’96 and ’97 while they also were top in 2001 and 2001.
The Masters winning duo of Fred Couples and Trevor Immelman will be making their debut in the event this year.
Couples, the 1992 Masters champion and former World No. 1, will team up with his 16-year-old stepson, Hunter Hannemann.
“Hunter and I are really excited to play in the PNC Championship this December,” said Couples, 15-time PGA Tour winner. “It’s a special event we’ve followed for a long time, and to now have the chance to be part of it together is incredible. I can’t wait to share the experience with him on the course and make some great memories.”
And the 2008 Masters champ Trevor Immelman will partner with his 18-year-old son Jacob Immelman.
“The PNC Championship has always been on our radar, and we were absolutely thrilled when we got the invite It’s a unique opportunity to compete together in such a special event,” said Immelman. “Jacob was by my side when I captained the International Team at the Presidents Cup, and he’s seen my work as a commentator on CBS but having him experience being inside the ropes with me will be something truly special. We’re both excited for the challenge ahead and the fun that comes with it.”
And a well done to Lee Trevino, who has competed in every edition of the event, and Mark O’Meara, who recently announced his retirement from professional golf, will once again team up with their sons, Daniel and Shaun. Together, they have accumulated an impressive 43 appearances in the PNC Championship.
And in looking at the images of those teeing-up this week there is only two players with male or female – Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar – who have not won a major championship.
However, Stricker and Kuchar have won a Players Championship which is one of the two eligibility criteria.
Tournament Format
On each hole, each player drives and the best drive is selected. Each player then plays a second shot from the spot where the selected drive lies, and the best second shot is selected. This process is repeated until the hole is completed.
Example: If both players teed off and Player 1’s ball landed in the rough, while Player 2’s ball landed in the fairway, Player 1 would pick up his ball and both players would play their second shots from Player 2’s position in the fairway. Every shot is played in this manner until the hole is completed.
And in greatly helping Woods, as was the scenario in his past appearances, competitors are allowed to ride in motorised buggies.
