Chilean-born Joaquin Niemann is just one round shy in joining golfing greats such as Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as back-to-back winners of the Australian Open.
Niemann will head into the final round in a four-way share of second place at 12-under and just two shots shy of the duro of Australia’s Lucas Herbert an Amercian Ryggs Johnston who lead the way at 14-under on the host Kingston Heath course in Melbourne.
Herbert had led the opening two days thanks to rounds of 63 and 66 but a third day 72 opened the door his rivals in this year’s 107th hosting of the Australia’s premier men’s tournament.

“I might have just let a few more people back into the tournament but I’m still leading, still where I want to be so, yeah, a good result from a frustrating day,” Herbert said.
Niemann was slow in starting his defence of the famed Stonehaven Trophy but a rousing second day 66 and an even better ‘moving day’ 64 has the LIV golfer well in the frame to win for a second year running.
