Scottish golfer David Law will be among 20 players who will return tomorrow (Thursday) to the Lakes course at the Infinitum Resort to resume their weather-delayed fifth rounds at Final Qualifying of the DP World Tour (DPWT) at Tarragona in Spain.
Play was halted yesterday (Tuesday) at 3.50pm local time due to thunderstorm activity in the area to the south of Barcelona while an hour later the Tour advised play was being called for the day and with an 8.30am Wednesday resumption.
However at around 7pm last night local time the Tour issued another statement via their ‘X’ account: “As a result of a Spanish Government notification regarding severe weather in the Tarragona area, there will be NO play on Wednesday. Round five will resume on Thursday at 8:30am, with round six not due to start before 9am”.
If my maths are correct, and arrangement goes to plan in Tarragona, it will have been 40 hours and 40 minutes since Law and his 19 colleagues lelf the course for the safety of the clubhouse and now return to resume their fifth round before heading straight into the sixth and final round over a mamouth seven days.
Of course, this will also depend on the condition of the course with today’s (Wednesday) forecast of heavy rain and wind gusts up to around 40 kph though Thursday’s forecast is much brighter with a cloudless sky, light winds and the temperature reaching 18 degrees Celcius.
The halt to play on Tuesday may have come at a good time for Law as he was struggling under the weight of three bogeys but no birdies while he had just pared the par-5 16th when the siren sounded. A day earlier Law burst up the leaderboard on the back of a brilliant 64 to put himself right into the mix to finish top-20 and win back his 2025 DPWT full playing rights.
Though he’ll tee-up sharing 22nd place at 12-under but just one shot outside of the top-20 and with the sixth and final round, and again with weather permittng, to tee-off at 9am tomorrow.
“I’ve played this course in pretty bad weather before in a tour event about three or four years ago”, said Law.
“I quite like the course and still feel quite comfortable around here but then it can play very different once the conditions change so, at least I have that experience from the in playing here”.
Italian Edoardo Molinari continues to lead the field by three shots at 24-under and with the now 43-year-old three holes of his third round to play.
