Bradbury Responds To ‘Anchoring’ Calls Declaring: “If You Have An Issue, Change The Rule”

Newly-crowned FedEx Open de France champion Dan Bradbury has responded to calls he should be disqualified from victory in last week’s FedEx Open de France as he was illegally anchoring his long-handled putter against his body.

“It’s within the rules, so if you have an issue change the rule. It’s not my fault”, said Bradbury in speaking with SKY Sports ahead of this week’s DP World Top stop in Spain.

There has been heated social media messages calling for the affable Englishman be stripped of the DP World Tour title he captured by a shot and the calls stemming from allegations the putter he was using was being seen anchored against his upper chest.

But not so said the towering 6-foot 2-inch Englishman who captured won a second Tour title from four players – Sam Bairstow, Thorbjorn Olesen, Yannick Paul and Jeff Winther – who shared second place on the host Le National course on the outskirts of Versailles.

“The way I grip my putter is with my left thumb on the top of the grip and you’re not allowed for that to be in touch of your chesst or with any part of your body”, said Bradbury.

“That would be declared as anchoring.

“I have, as an obviously bigger lad, a lot of space up there .. and the putter is allowed to touch my shirt and that is fine.

“So, I can go like that (moving his right arm) and sweep down and not touch my hands.  There is at least this much (See below: showing the gap between two fingers). I know that and the rules officials know it.

“Everybody that I have sort of played alongside and everyone just knows. Every person can see it.  But some people what to sit at home and comment on it. That’s fine but it’s within the rules.

“I get the stigma against it 100% and that’s fine.  So, say what you want to say.  I had that stigma till I tried it and then realised how good the putter is and how much it’s helped me.”
