Ferguson Chuffed To Be Top-10 After Shock Splash To Kick-Start His New Season

Ewen Ferguson was in good spirits heading into the weekend rounds of his first event of a new year and this despite making a penalty splash with his very first competition shot a day earlier at the inaugural DP World Tour’s Dubai Invitational.

Ferguson, who now calls Dubai home, posted a bogey-free second day three-under 68 to head into the weekend rounds sharing 10th place at five-under on the host Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club course.

He said: “It’s been a good two days, playing an event with no halfway cut and it’s been good to get back into competition.

“I’m also trying new clubs and stuff like that, so it’s been looking really good this first week.

“Being the first week back it’s kind of fun but then with no cut, it’s good to have a kind of free rip at it and we’ll see what happens”.

The double Tour winning Ferguson was also delighted to make amends in holing a six-foot birdie ‘4’ at the par-5 10th hole, where a day earlier he sent his opening drive at the start of his third full Tour season, into the drink right off the tee.

He said: “It’s my very first hole of the year. I stood up there at 10 and just sent it straight into the water.

“So, I’m thinking F*** here we go (laughing). I took my drop and then I’m on the green 50-feet from the pin, and I’m trying this armlock putting grip and left it 20-feet short.

“I managed to hole that for par and managed to relax after that.

“Overall, it’s only my first two rounds of the year so I’m happy to be under par and can’t complain”.

Hereunder is the DP World Tour video of Ewen speaking about his opening hole on day one of the first event of his third full Tour season, and also speaking emotionally of his delight being back on Tour among his friends.

Hot Dubai favourite Rory McIlroy overcame a horror ‘7’ mid-round to regroup and take a two-shot lead into the last two days.

McIlroy was in cruise control, four shots clear of his rivals, when found the water with successive tee shots at the par-3 eight hole.

The World No. 2, who defends his Hero Dubai Desert Classic title next week, regrouped with three inward nine birdies in a one-under 70 to be still two shots clear at 10-under.

McIlroy said: “I think if I look at the other 17 holes that I played, I played very, very well again

“So, it’s nice to go into the weekend still with the lead”.

OTHER SCOTS …

Newly-married Grant Forrest (Day two 68) one-under, Callam Hill (72) one-over, Richie Ramsay (74) four-over and Connor Syme (74) at six-over.
