Rahm Wonders ‘What The Hell’ After Being Hit By His Own Divot Day Two Acciona Spanish Open

Jon Rahm was wondering ‘what the hell’ when hit by his own divot during the second round of the Acciona Spanish Open in Madrid.

Rahm, and looking to capture a fourth Spanish Open title in five appearances, had hit his second shot into the par-4 sixth hole and just as he and his caddy headed off towards the green the World No. 2 was hit in the left shoulder by his divot.

The US-based Spaniard, who’s also competing for a first time since helping steer Europe to victory in the Ryder Cup, looked completely bemused by the incident and quickly sought to brush particles of grass and earth from his shoulder.

As it turned out, the divot from Rahm’s 90-yard tee shot had flown about 20-yards and it was the caddie to playing partner Yannick Paul who had tossed the divot backhand in the direction of Rahm and his caddy but not expecting to hit Rahm on the shoulder.

Rahm pared the hole on route to a no-frills one-over 72 to be heading into the weekend rounds at three-under, and eight adrift of Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, who birdied four of his closing six holes in score of 68 to lead by a shot at 13-under.

Pavon, who had been runner-up to Rahm a year ago, said: “It looks like it is really a place that suits my game.

“I have a lot of memories from last year and I really feel comfortable on the course.

“I see the shots quickly with the yardages I have got and obviously today was a strange day, it could have been much better when I started stronger, but it could have been much worse also, so I am just very pleased with today”.

Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest is the best of the now remaining five Scots, eagling his seventh hole on route to a score of 68 to move into a tie for seventh at seven-under.

Forrest had holed a 30-footer from behind the flag on six for his eagle ‘3’.

Gleneagles-attached Callum Hill is two shots back after a level par 71 that included five birdies but just as many bogeys.
